Joining knitted squares with crochet

Crochet is a great way to join together knitted strips or squares, as in this rainbow bedspread. It's less stretchy than knitting, which means that it will give your blanket more structure and less sag.

To join knitted garter stitch squares or strips together, insert crochet hook into a stitch at edge of each strip, pass yarn over hook and draw it through the first two loops on hook, pass yarn over and draw it through the other two loops. Repeat along the edge of the strips. You'll have a created a strong crochet seam - the perfect finishing touch for your knitting.

  1. Hi Nicky,
Thanks for your instructions. I've just taught myself to crotchet (maybe) and solved the problem I had with knitted squares. I'm on my way to finishing my yoga blanket. Cheers, Meryl

  6. Hi, first of all, thank you for your pattern idea. Wanted to know did you do a slip stitch edge or normal garter edge. If so how did you do it. I will be crocheting them together. Anne. X.

  7. Hello Anne! I just used a standard two needle cast on, but I can see this working just fine with any cast on stitch, really. Nicky

    1. Thank you for your answer. Also did you do a edge stitch to help with joining, for eg, alip first stitch and pull last. Anne. X

  8. Hello Anne! Yes, I did exactly that! If you treat it just as you would if you were starting a new ball of yarn while crocheting, it will work fine. Thanks! Nicky

  9. Hi Nicky,

Just found your instructions. My squares have been knitted on the diagonal - knit 1 then inc - knit 2 for dec. I'm wondering will I still be able to crochet together as I haven't the neat line as shown? Not sure if I can crochet, but will have a go! Jennie

  10. Hello Jennie! It's probably worth a try - I would think with a bit of trial and error there will be a way to make it work. Hope it all works out for you! Nicky

  13. Hi there- I've knitted my squares in garter stitch, using size ten needles and super chunky wool. What size crochet needle would I need to use to crochet them together? I hate sewing!

    1. Hi there! I'd try using the same size needle as the one you worked the squares in, and if the join seens to chunky, try a needle one size smaller. Hope that helps.
